Introduction

We offer a range of annual courses which complement the fields into which we are researching and support the development of specialist expertise in many areas. These courses are backed by a Department with an internationally recognised reputation for research and present a unique blend of theoretical and practical lectures taught by leading specialists in cardiology, who bring with them their exceptional expertise. We currently run courses on:

Barts & The Heart EP Grand Round 2014

With Barts Health NHS Trust’s expected merger with The Heart Hospital this year, we are much keener to invest our energies in a new Electrophysiology Grand Round that we will be running jointly with The Heart Hospital from April 2014 until we become a single unit. This will provide a forum for discussing aspects of clinical care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias and the group will meet throughout the year on 28th April, 16th June, 15th September, 13th October and 17th November at St Bartholomew’s Hospital where other centres will be presenting a case or cases. The meetings last one hour and are followed by light refreshments.

The discussions will be of high quality and attended by Consultants as well as a large number of junior staff, nurses and technicians. The meetings are very informal and the refreshment session afterwards allows an opportunity for informal discussion. It is a forum which allows considerable interchange between staff of different hospitals and will be a very valuable addition to the London electrophysiology scene.

All the meetings will take place at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Robin Brook Centre, West Smithfield, London EC1A 7BE from 18.30 to 19.30 followed by refreshments.

The 12th City Basic Electrophysiology Course on 16th and 17th July 2014

This Course is held annually and previous instalments of this course have attracted delegates from many specialties of cardiology including doctors, nurses, physiologists and technicians. This two-day course provides delegates with a comprehensive 'hands-on' training in all aspects of cardiac electrophysiology. The high lecturer-to-delegate ratio allows delegates an inclusive introduction to EP, with a central focus on practical sessions.

Managing Patients with Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators - November 2014

The Course on "Managing Patients with ICDs" is a one day course providing participants with a working knowledge of Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators and the safe management of this patient group. It is aimed at Clinical Physiologists, GPs, Nurses, SpRs, and all other health care professionals invested in this exciting field of medicine. Registration is limited allowing a high ratio of lectures to delegates and will be on a first come first served basis.
The aim is to answer the following questions for practitioners with little or no experience of these devices:

  • Who should have a defibrillator?
  • What do defibrillators do and how do they work?
  • What problems can occur?
  • How do I look after a defibrillator patient?

For any further information in regards to the courses mentioned above, please contact Eleanor McFarlane-Henry, Research and Training Coordinator at: e.mcfarlane-henry@qmul.ac.uk
