Forensic Human Identification Course
The Forensic Human Identification Course which was established five years ago will, from 2008, be held in Hendon and administered jointly by Queen Mary's medical school, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry together with the Metropolitan Police Crime Academy. Its aim is to provide a broad knowledge of the different aspects of human identification.
The course will be of interest to forensic practitioners from many different disciplines including police officers, lawyers, scientists, doctors and dentists and others with a professional interest in this area.
The course is linked to the Diploma in Forensic Human Identification offered by the Society of Apothecaries of London (www.apothecaries.org [new window]). For admission to the examination, candidates must have normally completed the course.
The course topics include:
- Legal and human rights issues in identification
- Identification of the body at different stages of decay
- Victim Identification from crime scene investigation including continuity and integrity of forensic evidence at scenes
- Forensic odontology
- Forensic osteology
- Investigation of clandestine graves
- Craniofacial identification
- DNA analysis including the human genome/molecular biology techniques and tool used in human identification
- Identification from prints
- Emergency planning and victim identification in mass disasters
- Behavioural profiling
- Voice recognition
