This centre is headed jointly by Mauro Perretti and Rod Flower. The main research emphasis is on the control of inflammatory diseases and mechanisms of anti-inflammatory drug action. Of particular interest to the Centre are the nature and function of endogenous regulators that mitigate and control the inflammatory response and (normally) bring about its timely resolution. The notion that malfunctioning of this system may precipitate or prolong inflammation and that it may be a causal factor in chronic human inflammatory disease is being actively investigated as is the concept that a new generation of drugs may be derived from a study of the properties of such counter-regulatory factors.
The Centre utilises techniques spanning in vivo and in vitro approaches including molecular biology, transgenic models, cell biology and human pharmacology of anti-inflammatories. There are extensive links with industry and with other groups both nationally and internationally.
