The William Harvey Research Institute offers one of the largest Centres for Clinical Pharmacology in the UK led by Mark Caulfield and Atholl Johnston. Our research strategy combines basic science; ranging from vascular biology (Ahluwahlia and Scotland) and genetics of cardiovascular disease programmes (Munroe, Ye, Wallace and Caulfield) to innovative clinical trials (Collier, Johnston, Langford and Caulfield) as a route to potential new therapies for cardiovascular disease, prevention of transplant rejection and pain management (Langford). Since 2000 we have held 2 MRC programmes and are co-applicants on 2 BHF Programmes and 2 Wellcome Trust Programmes (see major grants) as well as BHF and Wellcome Fellowships and several MRC PhD studentships. Our papers have been published in the New England Journal, Lancet, PNAS, the American Journal of Human Genetics, Circulation, Circ Research and Human Molecular Genetics. Since
2003 our collaborative cardiovascular trials publications have helped changed international treatment guidance.
