Richard Langford
Professor of Inflammation Science

 

Richard Langford graduated in Medicine from the Middlesex Hospital, University of London in 1979. Following  training in anaesthetics, pain medicine and intensive care was at St Bartholomew’s, and University College Hospital, London.  In 1991, he was appointed Director of the Anaesthetic Laboratory and Consultant / Senior Lecturer in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. The department joined Clinical Pharmacology  in the William Harvey Research Institute, and he became Reader in Anaesthesia and Pain Research in 2004.  He was also appointed Visiting Professor at City University, London. From 2003 he has held the joint School and NHS Trust posts of Clinical Director of the Clinical Research Centres, and Deputy Director, Research and Development.  In these roles he has contributed to the commissioning of new facilities for clinical research and gene therapy, and to a successful HEIF bid for a senior research business innovation post.  He has played senior roles in training and education having been a member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists Training Committee 2002-4; Royal College of Anaesthetists Regional Advisor, North Thames East, & Head of Barts & the London School of Anaesthesia (1999-2004);   Chairman, North London Anaesthetics Specialist Training Committee (2002-4).
In 1998-2000 he raised £0.75M and established the High Fidelity Medical Simulator Centre for undergraduate and postgraduate, multi-professional healthcare training, which was opened in 2000 by Princess Anne.

 

Current research interests

 

Acute & chronic pain studies. Established the Pain Research Group, now with eleven full-time research staff conducting clinical trials.
Development and evaluation of patient monitoring devices, including opto-electrical photoplethysmography, and depth of anaesthesia / cerebral monitoring during surgery and intensive care.
Full partner in ‘IBIS’ (1997–2000) and in ‘IMPROVE’ (1996-8) – two European Commission Biomedicine Projects.
