Dr Rupert Pearse

Rupert Pearse graduated in 1996 from St George's Hospital Medical School, London, UK. He then continued his post-graduate training at St George's and completed his training in Intensive Care Medicine. Throughout this time he developed his interest in the cardiovascular pathophysiology of critical illness. This culminated in his MD research into peri-operative haemodynamic therapies. In 2006, he was appointed at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. In 2008, he received the National Institute for Health Research Clinician Scientist Award. His work ranges from translational laboratory research to applied health services research. And industry sponsored clinical trials. Rupert undertakes his clinical work on the Intensive Care Unit at The Royal London Hospital. He is the academic representative on the board of the North-East Thames School of Anaesthesia.

Current research interests

Improving survival following major surgery: In particular throughimproved cardiovascular management. Rupert is chief investigator of the OPTIMISE trial, a large multi-centre trial of peri-operative haemodynamic therapy. He is participating in an investigation by the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome & Death into the inadequate provision of critical care beds for patients undergoing major non-cardiac surgery. Cardiac output monitoring technology: Use to guide haemodynamic management of critically ill patients and the development of more sophisticated end-points for intra-venous fluid and vasoactive drug therapies. Effects of exogenous adrenergic agents in critical illness: Traditionally used to achieve pragmatic end-points for arterial pressure and cardiac output, it is now clear that the effects of adrenergic agents are highly diverse. The microvascular effects of such agents may be of particular importance.
