Pre-clinical and intercalated B.Sc. studies at Leeds University (with Distinction in Anatomy). Qualified and graduated in Clinical Medicine from Cambridge University (with Distinction in Medicine, and Charles and Iris Brook Prize for Clinical Medicine from Caius College). Junior hospital posts in at Addenbrooke's Hospital (Cambridge), Ipswich Hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital (London), University Hospitals Leuven (Belgium) and Stuivenberg General Hospital (Belgium). M.R.C. Research Training Fellowship with Adrian Clark and Richard Ross (1992-1995). Appointed Honorary Consultant Physician at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London in 1995. M.D. from Cambridge University (for which awarded the Sir Lionel Whitby Medal from Cambridge University) . Wellcome Trust Advanced Research Fellowship with Ian Eperon (University of Leicester 1996-1998). Wellcome Trust Advanced Research Fellowship with Adrian Krainer (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, USA 1998-1999). Elected F.R.C.P. (London) 1998.

A highly-illustrated textbook of clinical endocrinology and diabetes mellitus has been written by Shern L. Chew and David R. Leslie. The textbook is intended for senior clinical medical students, junior doctors and endocrinologists in training. The book won the first prize in the Endocrinology category of the BMA book competition in 2006

Another highly illustrated textbook for pre-clinical medical students has been written by Joy Hinson, Peter Raven and Shern L. Chew. This focuses on clinically relevant anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. It will be available in the later part of 2007.
