Dr Leung undertook doctoral training at University of East Anglia. She then carried out research at UCL as a post-doctoral fellow and then took a senior post-doctoral position at Imperial College. After working in industry for four years as a Principal Research Scientist/ Group Leader in proteomics, Dr Leung returned to academia as Lecturer in Proteomic Medicine at WHRI. Dr Leung has worked in several dedicated proteomics laboratories including the Heart Science Centre with Professor Mike Dunn and the MRC core proteomic facility at King’s College. She has experience in all the core technologies, including two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE), mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF and LC-MS/MS), and SELDI-TOF.

Current research interests

Dr Leung’s work focuses on applying proteomic approaches to the study of cardiovascular diseases.  She is involved in protein analysis of candidate genes with the well-established BRIGHT study at the Institute. Current projects also include studies to understand the underlying mechanisms of left ventricular hypertrophy, and to elucidate endothelium signalling response to laminar shear stress.

In the laboratory, 2-DE is used for analysis of protein samples from a range of sources including cultured cells, tissue samples, and plasma. Downstream applications include quantitative analysis of gel spots and excision of protein spots for in-gel tryptic digestion, prior to protein identification by mass spectrometry (MS) using both MALDI-TOF (Waters) and LC-MS/MS (QTOF-micro, Waters).

Dr Leung’s expertise in protein analysis using mass spectrometry is also being applied to collaborative research projects using mass spectrometry-based methods at the Institute. These include protein identification, quantitative analysis using stable isotope labelling and phosphorylation analysis.

Please see http://www.whri.qmul.ac.uk/PAU/index.html for further information on collaboration.
