Rizgar Mageed qualified as a pharmacist from the College of Pharmacy at Baghdad University in Iraq in 1976. Started postgraduate studies at the Royal London Hospital School of Medicine in 1981 and was awarded a PhD degree at London University in 1985. Immediately prior to this award, Professor Mageed was appointed Research Fellow at the Department of Immunology University of Birmingham Medical School where he worked from 1984 till 1990 when he joined the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology as a Senior Scientist. In 1996, Prof. Mageed was appointed Senior Lecturer at Imperial College. In 2000, Prof. Mageed awarded an Arthritis Research Campaign Fellowship and appointed Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Rheumatology at University College London. Prof. Mageed was appointed to his current position as Professor of Experimental Immunology at the Bone and Joint Research Unit at the William Harvey Institute in December 2002.
Current research interests
Prof. Mageed’s research interests are in understanding the role of B-lymphocytes in autoimmune diseases. A principal line of interest has been in studying the structure and genetics of autoantibody production. These studies revealed disease- and site-specific clonal expansion of B-lymphocytes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. More recent studies examined the mechanisms that cause autoantibody production and B-lymphocyte defects. These studies have revealed basic abnormalities in the regulation of intracellular signalling mechanisms in B-lymphocytes. Prof. Mageed is currently developing genetic approaches and stem cells to restore normal intracellular signalling and biology in B-lymphocytes in autoimmune diseases.
